Spanish Fork Wind Farm in Jeopardy

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Owners of a proposed wind farm in Spanish Fork are counting on state lawmakers to reinstate a tax credit for renewable energy. It will yield approximately $50,000 for each of the farm's nine turbines, says Wasatch Winds Project Director Christine Mikell. Compared to the $50 million cost of construction, it's a small amount, but crucial to help with start up costs.

"Without that tax credit, the project won't be built," says Mikell.

Lawmakers failed to renew the credit in a scramble to enact more wide-ranging tax reform in March. Mikell says the wind farm's donors need a clear commitment from lawmakers before the 2007 General Legislative Session, perhaps in the form of an endorsement by a legislative committee this Fall. The Spanish Fork wind farm must be underway by early next year in order to meet a June 2008 contract with PacifiCorp.
