Organizer Hopes for Bush Protest With Different Feel
(KCPW News) When Utahns gathered last year to protest President Bush's visit, a prominent U.S. Senator referred to many of the demonstrators as "nutcakes." The comment fueled outrage from protesters - and inspired one local businessman to envision a new kind of rally. Greg Felice hopes to give the traditional anti-Bush protest a makeover when the President comes to Utah later this month. He tells KCPW's Julie Rose that he's shooting for a "no-nutcake" rally:
Greg Felice is helping to stage a protest during Bush's visit on August 30th. Details are online at www.utahvoices.org -- remember to wear your tie.
President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are scheduled to appear that day at the American Legion Convention at the Salt Palace.

I like what Greg is saying here. While everyone is welcome to the Aug. 30 Rally at City County building downtown--including potential "nutcakes"--I think he's suggesting that there are a lot of us who normally would never go to a protest who are in fact welcome to attend. As a grandfather, I want to express a profound grief at the direction this country is going under the Bush administration. I'm not a Democrat, but I am an American who is concerned with the war in Iraq, the lack of environmental policies in the country and the debt that the neo-con Republicans have run up.
Many of my conservative Republican friends and even my sister and her husband are concerned as well--particularly about the irresponsible way the Bush administration seems to be spending us into oblivion.
I hope they will attend the rally too on Aug. 30 at 11 AM--whether they wear a suit or not.

This inteview fails to identify Greg as a media/publicity spokesperson for the event - he is not the organizer of the event. A planning committee of approximately 30 active participants meets each week to flesh out the details. Greg fails to mention that the "far left" has been heavily involved in the organizing of this event and represents half of the active organizers.
This event welcomes all people, even those Republicans who voted for Bush (who, are the biggest "nutcakes" of all.) Dress/appearance is not an issue. Signs and clothing slogans are not an issue. The August 30 planning committee will not censor posters, clothing statements, or speeches.
This event has an official message of "We the People for Peace and Justice". The organizers and participants of the event wish peaceful resolution to international and domestic crises, an end to the many wars and other violent military acts the U.S. is engaged in, that justice be brought to the perpetrators and financial supporters/benefactors of war, and that civilian rights are restored to the citizens of this great nation - including basic human rights to those in far away, war-torn lands.
We are welcoming the visit of Bush and Rice with the above message, and will demonstrate our outrage to this administrations policies.

I want to strongly echo Jeff's comments.
KCPW had actually initially listed me as the sole organizer of this event - I called Julie Rose back and issued a correction to her regarding this mistake.
I am in no way shape or form heading this event. I am a press representative for the group of concerned citizens who are all collaborating in the planning of this rally. Participants are from the left, right, and center. Jeff has accurately stated the charter of concerns of the group.
While I and others plan on dressing somewhat more conservatively for the event, there are certainly no barriers of entry to participating.
We'd like everyone to feel welcome to come and express their concerns against this administration.

If we were lied to to go to war -- if that's an established fact -- that is an impeachable offense.

I'm sorry I won't be in town to participate in the WE THE PEOPLE demonstration on August 30. I did attend the last rally of NUTCAKES and was proud to be one of them. Besides the War in Iraq, there are several important issues that need to be addressed. Global warming, a livable wage, universal health care, alternative energy, nuclear proliferation, etc. are not "liberal issues" but genuine concerns affecting me and my grandchildren. BLIND FAITH IN BAD LEADERSHIP IS NOT PATRIOTISM. I urge everyone to stand up and be counted. As Thomas Jefferson stated, "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."
