Rising Property Taxes Pinch Utah Seniors

Sept. 1st is Deadline for Tax Relief

(KCPW News) Property taxes are going up across Salt Lake County, at the same time that property values are rising. The result is painful for homeowners - especially older Utahns with fixed incomes. Some tax relief programs are available for low-income seniors. KCPW's Julie Rose takes a closer look at aging Utahns trying to hang onto their homes and keep the taxman happy.

September 1st is the deadline for seniors to apply for a break on their property taxes. The so-called "Circuit Breaker" tax abatement can reduce property taxes for low-income seniors by as much as $700 dollars.

Salt Lake County Treasurer Larry Richardson says seniors must have a household income of less than $26,000 a year to qualify. About 4,000 households in the County took advantage of the circuit breaker last year. With property taxes rising as much as 134 percent in some cities, that number is likely to rise next year.

More information about tax relief for seniors, as well as disabled veterans and the blind, is available online at www.treasurer.slco.org.

How about single moms trying to hang onto their homes. At what point does the county live within their budget? At what point do they stop raising taxes? A soccer stadium? people are going to start losing their homes for a soccer stadium?
