Education Summit "Likely A First"

Every School District Represented at Gov's Gathering

(KCPW News) Representatives from all forty school districts in Utah came together Tuesday for an Education Summit hosted by Governor Huntsman. He called the day-long gathering a time for problem solving, not political speeches.

"I want to focus on those of you who are out in the trenches doing the work," said Huntsman. "And I think this is probably a first ever in the history of the state to have this kind of education summit where we have representatives from all the districts in the state."

About 200 principals, teachers, superintendents, state officials and lawmakers attended the summit. Panelists spoke on national education trends, as well as Utah-specific challenges.

Huntsman tailored the agenda to focus on his four education priorities: early childhood education programs like all-day kindergarten, more rigorous high school curriculum, improving math and science education in elementary school and reforming taxes to improve education funding.

I feel having an Education Summit is a wonderful idea, but I am very concerned that how to address the achievement gap wasn't one of the top priorities.
