Tolling Won't Cut It for Mt. View Corridor

None by KCPW

Public Meeting Set for Friday a.m.

(KCPW News) After months of financial analysis and public outcry over the possibility of making the Mountain View Corridor into a toll road, it seems even that won't be enough to get the west-side freeway built. Tomorrow (today) state lawmakers will learn what transportation officials have already discovered: tolling isn't enough.

The analysis shows even with a private company building the toll road, taxpayers will need to kick in an extra 500-million dollars.

The news puts a damper on supporters who hoped tolling would get the freeway built faster and without legislative support. The funding analysis covers 40 miles of road running on Salt Lake County's west side from I-80 to I-15 in Utah County. Construction is tentatively set to begin in 2008.

UDOT will hold a public meeting with lawmakers, city officials, environmental groups and property owners this Friday at 8:30 at the E-Center.
