City Council to Consider Private Contract for Bus Shelters
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) More often than not, bus riders in Salt Lake City wait for their ride in rain, wind or glaring sun. Only 77 of the more than 1,600 bus stops in the City have a shelter. But building shelters at every stop would cost $7.5 million dollars, plus countless millions to maintain.Tonight city officials will ask the Salt Lake City Council for approval to investigate the possibility of letting a private company build bus shelters and sell advertising on them for profit. Many Wasatch Front cities, including West Valley, Provo and Ogden already have such arrangements. There are some concerns, such as the clutter of additional advertising on the streets and in residential districts that might have concerns about some ad content.

The shelters in West Valley City and South Salt Lake that I've used are actually really nice and well worth the small advertisement. They don't have quite as large a bench though, something SLC could perhaps mandate in their decision.
