Early Voting a Big Success

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) About 74,000 Utahns have gone to the polls or mailed in a ballot during the last two weeks. State elections official Michael Cragun says that's about 10 percent of expected voter turnout. He calls the figure impressive compared to other states who have seen only 3 or 4 percent turnout in their first year offering early voting.

Cragun credits county clerks for getting the word out in their jurisdictions, as well as a coordinated media campaign funded by the Lieutenant Governor's office. Officials hope the early turnout will lessen pressure on polling locations tomorrow and make-up for the considerably fewer touch screen machines being used as compared to old punchcard systems.

Early voting by in-office absentee is still available at county clerk offices through 5 p.m. Monday.
