Swans Arrive on Great Salt Lake

Hunt is Underway

(KCPW News) Tens of thousands of tundra swans are resting on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake, on their way from Alaska to warmer climes in the south. Their arrival marks the peak of the swan hunt, which ends on December 10th.

Department of Wildlife spokesman Mark Hadley says tundra swans are challenging birds to hunt and provide tasty meat as well as an impressive wall mount. The swan hunt is shorter than most seasons in Utah and the state issues only two-thousand permits. This year, Hadley says wildlife officials have also added tundra swans to the list of migratory birds they are testing for avian influenza.
