HEAL Utah to Protest at Environmental Solutions Arena

Group Will Circulate Petition Urging Miller to Reconsider New Name

(KCPW News) Members of an anti-nuclear waste group will fan out tonight around the newly re-named Jazz arena and gather signatures on a petition urging Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to drop the "Environmental Solutions" moniker from the former Delta Center.

Vanessa Pierce is director of HEAL Utah, a longtime foe of the radioactive waste disposal company Environmental Solutions, formerly known as Envirocare. "We think that branding Utah as the nation's dumping ground is bad for Utah and a bad business decision on Miller's part," she said.

Pierce says that over the holiday weekend she saw first-hand the results of national news coverage of Utah's Environmental Solutions Arena debate. She said her out-of-state relatives only knew two things about Utah - that it has polygamy because of the Warren Jeffs trial, "and that we're home to a nuclear waste dump that was able to weasel its way into our sports arena."

HEAL Utah volunteers will be circulating petitions before tonight's Spurs game and handing out "glow sticks" to Jazz fans.
