Law Enforcement Group Will Ask 2007 Utah Legislature

(KCPW News 11/30/06) Look for the Salt Lake City COPS Methamphetamine Initiative, a network of more than 30 local agencies and the Salt Lake City Police Department, to ask the 2007 Utah Legislature for more money to fight meth:

"We're hoping to get additional money to have treatment available demand for people," says Marjean Searcy, project coordinator for the group, which takes a system-wide approach to reducing the impact of meth in the community.

In addition to expanding treatment options, Searcy says drug court programs are showing amazing success:

"That's something that we can be as communities very supportive with. We have about a 49 percent decrease in additional drug crimes for people who attend drug court."

Drug courts divert non-violent offenders from incarceration in favor of rehabilitation. To hear more from Searcy on the fight against meth along the Wasatch Front, click here.

Today is National Meth Awareness Day.
