City Considers New Feral Cat Laws

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake City Council is set to adopt a new method for managing the city's population of feral cats. Tonight, it will consider an ordinance that will make it legal for people to trap, neuter and release strays. No More Homeless Pets spokesperson Holly Sizemore says currently the city relies on euthanasia to manage feral cat populations - but trapping and neutering them is a more effective way of keeping the numbers down. Though no agency has pinpointed the size of Salt Lake's feral cat community, Salt Lake County Animal Services alone euthanizes an average of 100 a month that are brought to the shelter.
The Salt Lake City Council has already authorized a 10-thousand dollar grant to implement the trap, neuter and release program. Changing the ordinance is the final step.
