(KCPW News) Top economists in the state gathered Thursday to unveil their official forecast for the coming year. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:
Jobs, household income and tax revenues are soaring in Utah, and this year should see more of the same. The state's top economists have issued their forecast for the year and a summary of 2006 in which Utah saw 15-percent growth in tax revenues, the second highest job growth rate in the nation, and an unemployment rate so low businesses are struggling to fill their needs.
Upon hearing the report, Governor Jon Huntsman Junior offered his hope for continued strong growth because it provides more money for his initiatives. Chief among them is education. Huntsman calls Utah's teacher salaries "embarrassingly low," and has proposed a one-time bonus of one-thousand dollars for each of them. His budget also includes money for reducing class-sizes and offering kindergarten all day.
