"Gay Clubs" Bill Gutted in Utah House

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The Utah House of Representatives gutted a measure today that would have banned gay-oriented school clubs. The watered-down version got nearly unanimous support - including that of both openly-gay members of the House. Representative Christine Johnson says the substitute bill is a good compromise that supports parental involvement in school clubs without placing unreasonable restrictions on the students.

The measure no longer singles out sexuality as a prohibited topic of discussion. Johnson notes such talk is already against school rules. Nor would students be required to submit detailed agendas of their meetings for approval seven days in advance. Students will still need a parent's permission to participate. The sponsor of the bill hopes to reinstate some of the original language when the measure reaches debate in the Senate.
