Corroon Gives Stadium OK

(KCPW News) The man who killed the Sandy soccer stadium has now given his tacit blessing for the deal to go forward. Salt Lake Mayor Peter Corroon says he agreed to not block a plan by the Governor and State Legislature to divert 35-million tourism tax dollars for the stadium in the hope lawmakers would drop a handful of bills he believes will hurt the County.Primarily, Corroon wants Senate Bill 64 to disappear. The measure takes restaurant tax revenues away from the County and lets cities spend them instead. Corroon says that will devastate the County's parks and recreation programs. However, he says he's been given no assurances that his cooperation with the stadium will mean lawmakers play nice with the County.
Now that the stadium is nearly a done deal for Sandy, Corroon says he's "hopeful the rest of the legislative session will be a productive one" for Salt Lake County.
The Utah House is expected to debate - and approve - the stadium funding plan in the next day.
