"Gay Clubs" Bill Returned to Controversial Form
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) The so-called "Gay Clubs" bill is back to its controversial original version at the Utah Legislature. Last week the Utah House gutted all but a few innocuous details in the measure. But Representative Aaron Tilton - who sponsored the bill - says his colleagues were confused about what they were voting on, so he's revived the original version for a run at Senate approval. It requires parental permission for a student to participate in any club, and establishes parameters of appropriate behavior in student clubs - most of which already exists in state school board rules. And most importantly to the bill's sponsors, it gives a school district assurance that if it bans a club like the Gay Straight Alliance, the state Attorney General will defend the district in court. The full Senate will now debate the bill before returning to the House for another vote.
