EnergySolutions Bill Awaits Governor's Signature
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) A bill that will relieve EnergySolutions from a steady stream of lawsuits from environmental groups is just a signature away from becoming law. Utah lawmakers gave final approval to a bill yesterday that lets EnergySolutions make changes within its already-approved waste disposal site with approval only from regulators, rather than the Legislature and Governor. The majority of Utah lawmakers say the bill keeps government from interfering with EnergySolutions' private business. The Utah Attorney General's office recommended the change as a clean-up to the code, saying it will mean fewer challenges his office will have to fight. But the Healthy Environmental Alliance of Utah says those court challenges are crucial to protecting the safety of Utahns, as is the balance of having legislative and gubernatorial approval for changes the company makes.
A spokesperson for Governor Huntsman says he has not decided whether to sign or veto the measure.
