"Age Wave" to Crash on SL County

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Researchers say an "age wave" is set to crash on Salt Lake County by the year 2030 when senior citizens will outnumber school-age children. Mayor Peter Corroon says that will mean the need for more health services and the County must start buying land now for new hospitals and senior centers.

Those facilities are usually funded by property taxes, notes Corroon, so the coming age wave could put additional pressure on taxpayers. The study, conducted by the University of Utah Bureau of Business and Economic Research, also predicts that by 2050, Salt Lake County will be home to nearly half of all Utahns over 85. Around that same time, the reports adds that one in four Salt lake County residents will live on the West Bench where development is slated to explode.
