Pioneer Park Price Tag Climbing

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The price tag for improving Pioneer Park in downtown Salt Lake City is climbing. Construction bids for phase one of the improvements came in $400,000 over budget, says Mayor's spokesperson Patrick Thronson.

City administrators have found a few areas to cut costs, but are asking the city council to earmark an extra $300,000 for the dog park and walking trail included in the first phase. That would make the total price tag for initial improvements $1.7 million. Tonight the city council will consider the request and may opt to forgo the dog park or trail. Thronson says that would defeat the goal of making the park a more useful destination for city-dwellers.

The first phase also includes irrigation and sidewalk improvements to assist the Farmer's Market, as well as more trees and benches.

What a shame that Rocky didn't take the Olympic Committee up on their offer to do wonderful things with the park for free, a few years ago! We could have had all of that nice Olympic memorabilia in downtown Salt Lake instead of stuck in a corner of the U's stadium, plus other nice landscaping and features. The Hoberman arch would still be operational and fronting a stage. The Olympic torch would have been where we could have seen it more frequently. What a short sighted decision, losing that opportunity!
