Judge Keeps Kid Registry Alive Online

(KCPW News) Utah's registry to protect children from email porn will remain in effect for now. A district court judge refused to order an injunction as requested by a group of porn peddlers who believe the registry in unconstitutional. But the judge also refused Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff's request to dismiss the lawsuit altogether. Shurtleff says the decision is still a win for Utah since it means 170-thousand children with email addresses registered on the list will continue to be protected from porn and other adult content. He says the registry is working well - as evidenced by the more than 350 companies, including Playboy, that have agreed not to email children on the registry. Companies that send emails advertising porn, alcohol, cigarettes and gambling are expected to pay a fee and have the state check to see that none of those registered children are on their distribution lists. It could take a year for the suit to go to trial. Meantime, parents can sign their children up on the registry at www.utahkidsregistry.com.
