Soccer Stadium Opponents Plan to Challenge Utah Referendum Laws

None by KCPW

Signatures Due by 5 p.m. Today

(KCPW News) Organizers of "Get Real Utah" say they're not sure they have the 92-thousand signatures they need to put the ReAL soccer stadium deal on the ballot. If they come up short, spokesman Gary Forbush says it's a sign the referendum process is flawed:

"It's a Salt Lake County issue, yet we had to go statewide and spend a lot of resources, time and energy," says Forbush. "That's a real challenge, to talk to someone in Washington County about how taxes are being re-directed in Salt Lake County."

Utah law requires groups to gather signatures from 10 percent of people who voted in the last election for governor in 15 counties. They have until 5 p.m. today to submit all of the signatures to clerks in each county.

Forbush says regardless of the petition's outcome, Get Real Utah hopes to find the money and legal backing to challenge Utah's referendum laws in court. County clerks have until April 24th to certify that each signature on the referendum petition belongs to a registered voter in that county.

It's too bad that these are actually state TRT funds that the state gave to the county to use towards the stadium.

These were never county funds to begin with. But hey, those against the land purchase deal have never been ones to get correct information.

Why so much effort to stop taxes designed for tourism (TRT County) and economic development (RDA Sandy) for the purposes they were designed for?

It's cute that these people waste all this time, but focus on some real issues and taxes that come from the citizenry...

It's idiotic the zeal they put into SELF-FUNDED TRT taxes just shows their (and average Utahns) ignorance on how the taxes are created and for what purpose.

I, for one, am very glad we elect smart representatives to do our bidding (and now, I don't include Corroon in that category as it is clear he was gaming for popularity by jerking RSL around for 8 months)... I'll trust the 2:1 plurality of votes with the vast majority of our elected officals.
