Director of "The Mormons" Aimed for "Respectful, but not Uncritical"

(KCPW News) Tonight and tomorrow the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints takes center stage as the subject of a new PBS documentary from Frontline and the American Experience. The film's writer and director, Helen Whitney, is known for her work documenting spiritual issues. In a telephone conversation with KCPW's Julie Rose, Whitney speaks of her reason for focusing heavily on polygamy during the film, and of the zeal with which Mormons embrace their faith. First, though, she answers the most obvious of questions - why the Mormons and why now?

Director Helen Whitney calls her new documentary about the LDS Church "respectful, but not uncritical." The four-hour program airs in two parts tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m. on KBYU Channel 11 and KUED Channel 7.
