(KCPW News)Governor Jon Huntsman announced this week that Utah has joined The Climate Registry, a nonprofit, multi-state effort to address climate change. The group includes 30 other states, one Indian tribe and two Canadian Provinces that all agree to speak the same language when it comes to climate change. Utah Division of Air Quality Director Rick Sprott says each member of the Registry will begin reporting and tracking emissions information in the same way so policy makers can make good comparisons of data when addressing climate change.
Businesses are encouraged to report their emissions to The Climate Registry. Sprott says many in Utah are eager to participate so they can get credit for their early efforts to reduce emissions. Otherwise, many worry they will be penalized when new laws are put in place.
Utah's participation is not expected to cost taxpayers, since the non-profit Climate Registry is intended to be self-funded.expected to cost taxpayers, since the non-profit Climate Registry is intended to be self-funded.
