HiAs a previous food stamp user, I felt your experience was really off base. We loved food stamps. In fact, when a family member who grew up in poverty found out we were on food stamps she was elated--as she described it, "The time when my family was on food stamps was the best, we had never eaten so good!" Yes, I felt it was uncomfortable to make the initial appointment--embarrassing really. And hard to accept that we were taking a govt handout. THat said however, there was more than enough money--and we were only alloted money for two of the three people. We had a joke that you could tell you was poor and on foodstamps by the amount of food in their cupboard. You can even buy take and bake pizza. One friend commented that now she understood why poor people could be obese--because it is your only freedom in poverty. Think of it like an atm card that adds more money every month--money that is not deleting your bank account. Sure you need to budget--but everyone needs to budget. I also felt the card was very discreet. Unlike the past, food stamps are distributed onto an atm card that only somoene on foodstamps woudl recognize. I just thought I would represent the opinion of someone who has used foodstamps for real and how much it is appreciated and how fabulous the program is. Keep it up govt.
