(KCPW News) Funding for the ReAL Salt Lake Soccer Stadium in Sandy is back before the Salt Lake County Council, for what many hope will be the LAST time. The Council is being asked to sign off on an agreement with the state promising to collect 35-million dollars in hotel taxes over the next 20 years to be used on the stadium. Councilman Dave Wilde says he'll probably support the interlocal agreement, though he was one of several on the council opposed to the stadium project over the last two years. is none-too-thrilled to be back on the subject:"The way I see it now, a decision has been made by the state, not by the county," says Wilde. "It's been kind of shoved down our throats and I think some will grumble that they don't like it. But we understand that people who have more power than we do have made a decision that we have no power to overturn."
Wilde When the County Council and Mayor refused to approve the stadium funding deal, the Utah State Legislature and Governor Jon Huntsman went over their heads to commit the hotel tax dollars. Council Chair Mark Crockett doubts the agreement will re-open the old debate over of the stadium. Although. . .
"If I thought it would help, I'd be happy to reopen it," chuckles Crockett. "But I doubt that it would. And therefore I doubt that it's going to be a long discussion. I probably will continue to vote no, but I think it will pass and I think this issue's been decided a long time ago."
Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon has also put his signature on the interlocal agreement between Salt Lake County and the Governor's Office of Economic Development, which is brokering the deal.
