Midday Utah begins after the 9 a.m. news
The energy bill passed by the Senate last week would increase vehicle fuel economy standards by 10 miles per gallon to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. According to Daniel Lashoff, the bills fall short in other areas of concern as well, including global warming, and land and water protection. Dan Lashoff is the Deputy Director of the Climate Center at the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, D.C.

He and his business partner, Amy Gahran, just received a $90,000 Knight News Challenge grant to develop a new way to combine digital journalism and community interaction. Called the Boulder Carbon Tax Tracker, the web-based project is meant to keep the focus on this single community issue, and add to the dialogue a variety of opinions from many sources, including the public, professionals, and city government. The idea is to go beyond the spotty media coverage important community concerns often get.
