Power Company Execs Leery of Government Carbon Restrictions
None by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) Power company executives expressed an interest in reducing Utah's carbon footprint. However, those same executives say they're concerned about any government restrictions on carbon emissions.During a legislative committee meeting, capturing and storing carbon was suggested as one way to reduce emissions. But, experts say the technology to capture carbon hasn't been perfected, and power stakeholders are concerned the government will set unreachable standards.
Dr. Dianne Nielson, the Governor's Energy Policy Advisor, says an energy program may require some legislation. She adds stakeholders and lawmakers must work together for results that benefit everyone.
The committee also vowed to further research the possibility of nuclear energy development as an avenue to reduce carbon emissions. Nielson says that's another area where technology and waste management is a significant concern.
