Tooele County is Tops for Jobs

(KCPW News) Money Magazine says Tooele County is the number one place to live if you're looking for work. That's due, in large part, to an influx of new manufacturing plants, says Tooele County Commission Chair Colleen Johnson:"People are looking for mechanics, skilled laborers, technical jobs," says Johnson. "We have several new business at our industrial depot and they're looking for skilled laborers and management, also."
Allegheny Technologies is building the nation's first titanium plant constructed in fifty years. And they're building it in Tooele. The company will spend 450-million dollars on the plant and create 150 new technical jobs paying above-average salaries. A cabinet manufacturer and a castings company are also scheduled to open this year in Tooele County. Economic Development Corporation of Utah President Jeff Edwards says the new jobs created by those plants go beyond typical factory positions:
"The new manufacturing facilities being built now are considerably more sophisticated than the assembly line jobs that were around in the decades of the past," says Edwards. "They're using pretty sophisticated machines and computers that require a good deal of skill."
Edwards says Tooele's affordable housing, available land and proximity to the airport have made it a magnet for manufacturing companies. Money Magazine points to Tooele County's impressive job growth rates, which mirror much of the state. For the last year, Utah has had one of the nation's lowest unemployment rates and highest number of new jobs created.
