Only One Utah County Makes The List
(KCPW News) Nearly one in every 10 of the more than 3,100 counties in the U.S. have a population that is more than 50 % minority, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau.Only one county in Utah, San Juan County which is nearly 60 % American Indian, made the bureau's "majority-minority" list. Salt Lake County is approximately 23% minority, while Weber County is approaching 20%.
Pam Perlich, an Economist with the University of Utah Bureau of Economic and Business Research, says smaller focus areas, like neighborhoods and schools, are necessary to find majority-minority areas in Utah. Perlich adds that Utah's high birth rate among white women makes it unlikely that further counties in the state will reach a majority-minority population.
According to the Census report, Los Angeles County in California has the highest minority population at 71%. At 7 million people, L.A. County's minority population is greater than the population of 38 states.
