Smaller School Districts, Animal Torture on Agenda

(KCPW News) Governor Jon Huntsman will call the Utah Legislature into Special Session next Wednesday, August 22nd to pass laws on smaller school districts and animal cruelty.

Supporters of East-side communities who want to split from the Jordan and Granite School Districts pushed for the special session so lawmakers can pass a funding plan that should guarantee both old and new districts will have enough money for their buildings. Without that plan in place, the Salt Lake County Council says it won't put any district split on November's ballot.

During the special session, lawmakers will also consider legislation to make animal torture a felony. Some of that measure's biggest opponents are now on board with a proposal that will allow felony punishment to kick-in on the second offense of animal cruelty.

Governor Huntsman is also asking lawmakers to pass legislation that will let Garfield County release bonds to expand its correctional facilities.
