Midday Utah begins after the 9 a.m. news

Not only are housing foreclosures soaring, but the stock market is taking a beating. Here to to explain what's going on with financial markets is Dean Baker, an Economist and the Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. He was one of the first to identify the impending bursting of the stock market bubble. And he talked with us on this program as long ago as August of 2003 about the coming housing bubble. He is the author of the new report titled "Midsummer Meltdown: Prospects for the Stock and Housing Markets."

In the first segment today we talked with economist Dean Baker about instability in the housing and stock markets. Americans are also being pinched by inflated food prices, especially double digit increases in the costs of essential staples of our diet, like milk and eggs. To speak about that particular economic problem is Kevin Hall, national economics correspondent for McClatchy Newspapers. His recent article titled "Prices for key foods are rising sharply" can be found online at AlterNet.org.
