Lawmakers Smooth Jordan District Split

Funding Solution Waits for Another Day
(KCPW News) Lawmakers gathered in special session yesterday, but ended up not even discussing the main issue for which they requested the meeting. They did, however, pave the way for at least one group of East-siders to create a new school district. KCPW's Julie Rose has this Capitol Hill report:
A proposed east-west split of the Jordan School District is headed for a vote in November. State Senator Carlene Walker says the Jordan split will be a test case for legislators and expects a lot of changes to the law before the new district is officially formed in 2009.
During yesterday's special session lawmakers failed to pass a formula that would guarantee the West-side of Jordan School District will still have enough money for its buildings when the East-siders leave. Legislative leaders say there simply wasn't enough support for it. Instead, they created a new task force that will study ways to equalize funding for school buildings.
