New Mexico's Move To Paper Ballots Proves Successful

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) A report issued this week by researchers from the University of Utah, the University of New Mexico and the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project shows that more than 80% of voters rated New Mexico's switch from electronic voting machines to a paper ballot system as good or excellent.

Thad Hall, a professor of Political Science at the University of Utah, says the 2008 election could be the litmus test for other states. He says if the election goes poorly, it's likely state legislatures will push for changes in voting systems. Hall adds there isn't enough time before the 2008 election for states to make changes to their current systems.

Hall credits the state of New Mexico for educating poll workers and voters about the paper balloting system before the election. He says that preparation went a long way towards making the voting experience a positive one.
