Docs and Moms Hit Road To Battle Possible Coal-Fired Power Plant

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) A group of Utah moms and doctors are headed to Sevier County next week to speak out against a proposed coal-fired power plant.

Dr. Brian Moench of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment says the goal of the trip is to help residents understand the public health consequences if the plant is built. He says their message is that air pollution causes genetic damage and the pollution they breathe now may affect the health of future generations.

Representatives from Utah Moms for Clean Air are joining the doctors on the trip to Sevier County. Spokesperson Cherise Udell says the group wants to reach out to mothers who may not have knowledge of the danger of coal-fired power plants to their children.

Aside from the health and environmental impacts of the proposed plant, Moench says the economic impacts may be negative as well. He says consultants tell them that property values in Sevier County may fall because of air pollution generated by the plant.
