Name Change Won't Alter Salt Palace Marketing

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake County Council voted yesterday to honor late Utah Governor Calvin Rampton by adding his name to the Salt Palace Convention Center. However, those charged with running the building say the name change won't alter their marketing efforts.

Scott Beck, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau, says it's important to maintain the brand equity of the building. The SLCVB will continue to market the facility as the Salt Palace Convention Center. The building's website will not be changed and Rampton's name will only be added to future materials.

The SLCVB is funded by county hotel taxes. Beck says he is awaiting word from the county as to when the name change will take effect and when ceremonies will take place.

Beck adds the focus of the name change is to provide a living memorial to Rampton in the community. Rampton served three terms as Utah's governor. He is widely recognized for using tourism to kick-start the state's economy.
