Becker To Create "Education Partnership Coordinator"

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Should he be elected mayor of Salt Lake City, lawmaker Ralph Becker says he plans to create a position within the mayor's office whose job will be to forge partnerships with the Salt Lake City School District and neighborhood schools. He says the Education Partnership Coordinator will help determine municipal policies and actions for schools.

The position is part of Becker's larger 180-Day Action Plan, which he released yesterday. Becker's opponent in the mayor's race, Dave Buhler, says quote "it doesn't make a lot of sense" to create the education position. Buhler says public education leaders need a mayor who supports them rather than another person looking over their shoulder.

Buhler says rather than create a new education position, he would do the work personally because he has established relationships with the President of the Board of Education, the board members and the superintendent.
