Voters in Davis County To Decide on R.A.P Tax
None by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) Davis County voters will be deciding tomorrow whether to boost sales taxes to fund recreation, arts and parks in the county. Much of the debate on the issue surrounds the proposed construction of a performing arts center in Centerville. Opponents of the so-called RAP tax say public funds should not be used to build the facility. However, West Bountiful Mayor James Behunin says the construction of the performing arts center will draw revenue from other areas."In fact a majority of the cost of the performing arts center would come from Centerville's contribution of the land and money from their RDA," says Behunin. "I'd be a little bit more reluctant if it were entirely funded through sales tax."
Behunin adds half of the RAP tax would be used for recreation. If voters approve the tax, Behunin says he plans to push using the money for a regional baseball park or for designating property for city parks and trails.
The Davis County RAP tax would boost sales taxes a 10th-of-a-cent. More information on the tax is available here.
