S.L. County Council Responds to D.A. Request

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller's plea yesterday for more staffing paid dividends today.

The Salt Lake County Council voted to give Miller enough funding to hire four new attorneys, five secretaries and two paralegals. The council also provided funding to supply Miller's staff with cell phones and laptop computers, at a total cost of $1.3 million.

Miller held a press conference Monday to ask for 40 additional staffers, including nine attorneys. While pleased with the additions, Miller says the new staffers will only allow her office to maintain the status quo. The American Bar Association recommends an annual caseload of 150 felony cases per prosecutor. Miller says that by the end of 2007, prosecutors in her office will have an average caseload of about 215 cases.
