State Capitol Set For Rededication

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Following a nearly decade long restoration project, Utah's State Capitol is set to re-open today. That restoration project included a seismic retrofit of the building, which should now be able to withstand up to a 7.3 Richter magnitude earthquake.

Jerod Johnson of Reaveley Engineers and Associates, project manager over structural design for the $227 million project, says in the event of an earthquake, there would be minor cracking to the building and it's likely some systems would go offline, however occupants of the building would be safe.

Today's rededication of the State Capitol begins at 2pm. The Capitol will then be open to the public until 5:30 today and will conclude with a fireworks show. The Capitol open house continues through January 12th and is open daily from 9am to 8pm.
