Measure Pays $5,000 More for Teachers in Critical Areas

(KCPW News) A measure this session aims to boost the number of math and science teachers in Utah. Senator Howard Stephenson's bill offers a $5,000 salary increase for instructors who work in schools with a "critical need" for such teachers.

Stephenson's bill has the support of the State Board of Education, which will have the discretion to determine where there is a "critical shortage" of math and science teachers. The bill earmarks $7-million for the incentive, enough money to give it to 1,400 full-time teachers. A link to the bill is available here. Or, click here for a podcast of a panel discussion at the Hinkley Institute Thursday, when Stephenson discussed the bill, and others he is proposing.
