Booster Seat Bill Back In Front of Lawmakers

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) According to Safe Kids Utah, more than 2,000 of the state's children between the ages of five and eight were injured, and nearly 50 died, in car accidents between 1999 and 2004.

Democratic Representative Tim Cosgrove says 60% of those injuries and deaths could have been prevented if the children were in booster seats. For the third straight year, Cosgrove will carry legislation to require children between the ages of five and eight years old, or up to 57 inches tall, to be restrained in a booster seat.

Cosgrove equates this issue with a federal law passed in 1996 requiring the installation of airbags in all vehicles. He says educating lawmakers, new parents and grandparents about new information on booster seat safety and technology will be the key to passing the bill this year.
