Money Needed to Boost Police Force
(KCPW News) Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson is recommending a small property tax increase to help pay for eight new police officers on the city's force. The proposal also includes a sergeant and two crime lab technicians for a total cost of just under a million dollars. The tax hike would amount to a $7.80 yearly tax increase on a home valued at $190,000. Mayor Anderson says the strain on the city's police department is exacerbated by a daytime population influx that nearly doubles the resident population. While growth of city revenue has been strong, Mayor Anderson says it has been unable to keep pace with fuel costs. Last year the City Council added ten new officers to the police force, and will consider the Mayor's tax hike proposal when creating this year's budget.
