DABC Plans Public Hearings on Private Club Laws

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Governor Jon Huntsman has asked lawmakers to consider the possibility of making more changes to state liquor laws, including ridding the state of private clubs. The Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission has scheduled two hearings over the next two weeks in an effort to gather input from the public.

"We haven't received any formal invitation, which we thought we would, but we are definitely going to be there," says Lisa McGarry, an attorney and member of the Utah Hospitality Association. "We've organized an effort to get as many private clubs to the meeting as possible."

McGarry says they hope for a reasoned and calm public commentary during the hearings. Earlier this year, the UHA filed paperwork to begin a statewide initiative to abolish the private club concept. Members of law enforcement have also been invited to attend the hearings. Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder says he'll be there, however he has no plans to speak his mind on the matter.

"This particular issue really is one that the community should weigh in on, and other policy makers. Our role is really to enforce what we are provided. We look forward to a good discussion and we'll see what comes out of it," says Winder.

The public hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, at 10 a.m., and Tuesday, June 17, at 6 p.m. Both hearings will be held at the Administrative Office of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control at 1625 South 900 West.
