Utah Democrats Heading to Convention Soon

Aug 18, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) This week, Utah Democrats will be packing up and heading out to Denver for the Democratic National Convention, which starts next Monday. State party co-chair Rob Miller runs the Democrats' Utah Amicus blog. With six other bloggers joining him on the road, his goal is to cover the convention differently than major media outlets.

"We're gonna be working with our delegates; we have such a great bunch of people, both Hillary and Obama delegates, that are coming on this adventure," said Miller. "We're gonna try to really tell their story, try to tell the story of Utah Democrats from our perspective."

Miller was on Senator Hillary Clinton's Utah steering committee, but says the process has played out fairly and he's excited to see Senator Barack Obama speak at the convention.

Democrats have gone to great lengths to unify Clinton and Obama supporters, especially by planning to hold a roll-call vote to allow Clinton delegates to formally vote for her at the convention. But Miller says the event will be more than just a public relations extravaganza.

"You never know what direction they're gonna take, and where they're going to lead you. I do think there will be a discussion, however, from what I'm hearing, a lot of people are pleased with the new platform," said Miller. "You can't please everybody, but there will absolutely be a discussion. I'm just excited to watch the process, and of course support Howard Dean and the DNC, but you never know what's gonna happen at a convention."

Starting next Monday, stay tuned for KCPW's extended coverage of the Democratic National Convention. We'll bring you four hours from NPR every evening, and will do the same when the Republicans convene the following week in Minneapolis.

Rob's blog is one of the reasons I'm now a Utah Democrat. I can't wait to see his coverage at the convention.

GO ROB!
