Democratic Delegates Discuss Upcoming Convention

Aug 20, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) Utah's delegates to the Democratic National Convention will be heading to Denver for the big event next week. Emily Rushton converted from the Republican Party a few years ago and is pledged to vote for Senator Hillary Clinton. She says she's most excited about joining the service projects in Denver next Wednesday as part of Delegate Service Day.

"It's just a big service day, all the delegates and others in the community are getting together and doing community service around Denver, kind of giving back to the neighborhood since they are so graciously letting us host the convention there," said Rushton.

Rushton is one of nine Utah delegates Clinton won during the Super Tuesday primaries in February. Senator Barack Obama won the remaining 14.

Another Clinton delegate is 18-year-old Jordan Apollo Pazell, who was recruited by her campaign after volunteering in Iowa. Although he put off going to college for a year in order to campaign for her, he calls Senator Barack Obama a great candidate.

"I think everybody's excited about him now. I think that it was a contentious primary season, but it's only good for the party," he said. "It's good that we have two sides of the party, and it gives us an equalization of ideas. I'm excited for the convention, I'm excited for Senator Obama, and excited for Senator Clinton."

Starting Monday, KCPW will be broadcasting several hours of special convention coverage from NPR every evening.
