County's Council on Diversity Affairs Adds Three New Members

Aug 26, 2008 by Elizabeth Ziegler

(KCPW News) Utah is not only growing in population, it's becoming more diverse. And this is especially true along the Wasatch Front. Salt Lake County's Council on Diversity Affairs, or CODA, is also growing. The council of nineteen just added three new members. Since its inception three years ago, the council has seen the passage of a Diversity Action Plan, new hiring protocols for employees, and a diversity training program for county employees. KCPW's Elizabeth Ziegler attended a recent meeting and files this audio postcard:

CODA is currently working with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office to address the over-representation of minorities in the criminal justice system. The council has partnered with community health organizations to address barriers to health care, especially mental health. And CODA is working with local school districts to encourage minority students to choose an education path that will lead to lucrative tech careers.
