Utah Delegation Tries to Block New Monuments

Republicans in Utah’s Congressional delegation are sponsoring legislation to prevent the president from designating any new national monuments in the state. This week, Congressman Rob Bishop introduced the Utah Lands Sovereignty Act, co-sponsored by Congressman Jason Chaffetz, with a companion Senate bill from Senators Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch.

Lawmaker Says Church Statement Not a Game Changer

A new statement from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints advocates a way for illegal immigrants to be quote “square with the law,” and decries mass expulsion or mistreatment of them. Some state lawmakers say it’s enough to change the minds of Republicans who want to repeal a guest worker permit bill signed into law by Governor Gary Herbert, but as KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, one GOP legislator says for him, the church’s statement is as clear as mud.

Too Few Kids Particating in Summer Meal Programs, Study Shows

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation, says a new report, and many low-income kids in the state know that too well as school lunch programs end and summer begins. According to an annual report from the Food Research and Action Center, only 16 percent of Utah children who participate in a school lunch program participated in the summer program last year. Gina Cornia, Executive Director of Utahns Against Hunger, says that number is actually up slightly from the previous year, but too few low-income kids are benefiting from summer meals.
