Quake Simulator Prepares Utahns for the Real Thing

Utahns didn’t feel the earthquake that rattled the east coast last month, but the state’s Department of Public Safety is giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like in an earthquake simulator at the state fair. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, it’s all part of a campaign to get families prepared for the strong possibility of a quaking Wasatch Front.

Radio Producer Relates Trip to Afghanistan to Utah Experiences

Just after the September 11th attacks, radio producer Scott Carrier drove from his home in Salt Lake City to Chicago, asking people along the way if they were ready to go to war. Then he went to Afghanistan, wanting to meet “the enemy” firsthand. His new e-book, Prisoner of Zion, weaves stories from that country with tales from Utah, making sense of how the human race can rise above fear and anger.

Utah State Fair Hopes to Educate Kids on Importance of Farm Life

For the next ten days, thousands of people from across the state will gather in Salt Lake City for the state’s 156th annual state fair. In addition to cotton candy and rides, officials say they are hoping families will come to see farm life. The importance of which they fear is being lost on Utah’s youth.

Redistricting Committee Stalls on Senate Map

A legislative redistricting committee considered two maps this morning for the Utah Senate boundaries, but neither got the stamp of approval. One of the maps came from the citizen group Fair Boundaries Coalition, while the other came from the redistricting committee’s co-chairman. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, the second map raised lots of concern over Tooele.

Walmart Re-Zone Rejected, But Supercenter Still Coming to East Side

A years-long battle over the big box is now over on Salt Lake City’s east side – and it means Walmart will still be moving into the neighborhood, but not with a new store. In a six-to-one vote last night the Salt Lake City Council rejected a request by the company to rezone its property on 2700 East Parleys Way, which would have enabled it to tear down the existing building.

Initiative Group Releases Map Proposals

Nearly a month ahead of when the Utah Legislature is set to vote on a new set of political boundaries, another group met at the Capitol Tuesday to present maps it says are more in line with what Utahns want to see in redistricting. Fair Boundaries field director Glenn Wright says the non-partisan group has been working on drawing fair maps since 2010, and wants a chance for its voice to be heard.

Chevron Settles With City and State Over Oil Spills

After months of negotiations, Chevron has reached a proposed settlement with Salt Lake City and the state of Utah over two oil spills that plagued the city last year. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, the settlement is expected to cover the damages to property and waterways, but at least one doctor is worried that none of the money is being set aside for long-term health damages.

Beam from World Trade Center Displayed in Salt Lake

Firefighters from Grants Pass, Oregon, made a stop at a Salt Lake City fire station this morning, displaying a piece of the World Trade Center retrieved after the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Joe Hebert, one of the firefighters who flew to New York to collect the steal beam, says it’s a floor girder from one of the Twin Towers. He says it’s incredible to see that there’s concrete left on the beam because of the enormous force it endured.
