CityViews 5/28/12: Making Furry Best Friends/”1493″

Segment 1:

Thirty years ago, animal shelters routinely euthanized stray cats and dogs to the tune of 17 million a year. But a widespread no-kill campaign and adoption events have whittled that number to less than 5 million. On Tuesday, we’ll talk about the on-going movement to provide sanctuary for homeless animals.

  • Gregory Castle, Best Friends Animal Society

Segment 2:

As the song goes, “In Fourteen-hundred-ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” But what happened in 1493? What were the environmental, ecologic and economic consequences of that fateful meeting between the Old World and the New World? On Tuesday, Charles Mann joins us to talk about the aftermath of Christopher Columbus’s historic visit to the Americas.

  • Charles Mann, author, “1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created”

Charles Mann will speak about the impact of Columbus’s cross-Atlantic voyage on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Library, 210 E. 400 South, Salt Lake City.
