I thought the program presented the fundamental problems of traditional education well (one size fits all), but offered only one solution – technology – as an answer to individualizing instruction. WHAT ABOUT MONTESSORI? The counter-problem with technology is that it doesn’t match the hands-on way that children learn, especially young children. Montessori manipulatives do, and the Montessori method of instruction makes individualization possible. The program interviewed Angeline Lillard, one of the best most knowledgable researchers on Montessori education, but this approach was not mentioned. Why?
Montessori (and other alternative education models) were not presented as this documentary was not intended to explain all possible learning models. The documentary is focused on how technology can and has been used effectively in some schools. It mentions the pros and cons of using technology in the classroom. I think delving into other educational models was simply beyond the scope of this documentary.
