Please join the University of Utah’s Friends of the J Willard Marriott Library for an eventful evening of a display of rare books, dinner, silent auction, and a presentation by Santa Fe rare book dealer, Michael Vinson. He will discuss his forthcoming book, Bluffing Texas Style: The Arson, Forgery and High-Stakes Poker Capers of Rare Book Dealer, Johnny Jenkins.
John Holmes Jenkins career as a writer and publisher and later rare book seller began in 1965 with his 10 volume bibliographical guide to the history of Texas. In 1975, the Jenkins Company became one of the most substantial booksellers in the country when Jenkins purchased the legendary Edward Eberstadt and Sons inventory of rare Americana for nearly three million dollars.
In 1971 he worked with the FBI to recover stolen Audubon copperplate engravings and later, as president of the ABA, the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, he organized a national system for identifying and publicizing the theft or loss of rare books and valuable materials from libraries, book sellers and private collectors.
